The Frank Luntz Avoid-the-Facts (ATF) Strategy Playbook

As far as I'm concerned, the hottest thing off the presses (literally, mine was hot coming off the Kinko's printer) is The Luntz ATF Playbook (zip file consisting of two PDF's).

That gem is 160 pages of Frank Luntz's advice to GOP-sters for keeping the House in 2006, which I am glad to say he admonishes may be lost if those running don't work and work hard. He even goes so far as to explain how Dems are better at the things at which we are better ( and why) as well as how to appropriate from us our corner on those things. Yes, this is the playbook of a man whose dream, like Karl Rove's (among many others) is generations of Republican domination. And I gotta say it does my heart good to see just how scared of us they really are.

They are so scared in fact that they have taken to abandoning the idea that they have better ideas or a better philosophy; Luntz admits they don't - that liberals and conservatives essentially want the same things and fear the same things - but that the liberal and conservative approaches to those things are the main difference between them. Hence (though I haven't read it in his words yet) their only hope is to co-opt our terms because our terms embody those shared principles in more appealing words than conservative terms. I would add that liberal language embodies our principles better because it is a reflection of actual philosophy encompassing actual compassion and humanism. Their language (now being rapidly transferred into our terms) couldn't win elections for - what, 40 years? - because it does embody their values - and in essence their values are greed and militarism, both born of fear; fear of not having enough food, money, shelter (resources) and if or when acquired can only be protected through might but not justice, not liberty, and definitely not compassion.

They are cloaking their philosophy of greed and military excess in words liberals have imbued with meaning that reflect liberal values. Take a term like Clean Skies for example. Liberals have worked to make clean skies a reality in people's minds. Liberals did the heavy political lifting of environmental stewardship. Because of that Americans understand that clean skies mean clean air and that clean air should be a fundamental right they can expect. Liberals created value in that phrase, now conservatives are stealing that value and using it to cloak their actual anti-regulation (ergo anti-environmental) agenda.

Conservatives can not win in 2006 unless they use our terms - and we must make sure they don't - they can't - we must beat them to the punch by appropriating whatever words they are currently using and those they intend to use; that's where your reading the Avoid-the-Facts Playbook comes in...

There are a few blogs already dissecting and analyzing the Luntz ATF Playbook, and I will add them to the Research section of my links list, as well as the ATF Playbook itself. I expect everyone to print, share, read, memorize and digest the information in that playbook - and most of all to apply it.

There will be a test, in 2006.

Did Gannon/Guckert Meet Dirty-trickster Buddies of Rove's on the Washington D.C. Swinger Circuit?

True liberals have always known that the Bush Cartel would do anything to get in power and then stay in power; that is why we believe Election 2004 was stolen. But this kids, is either Heaven or Hell. Heaven if the thread being unwrapped ends in members of the Bush Cartel, including Rove, going down for a dozen counts of treason each (at best) or a hundred counts of criminal activity (at least). It is Hell if after this thread unwraps they get nothing.

What is it we are unraveling?

Well, over at Daily Kos some sleuthing suggests - in extremely convincing terms - that James Guckert (aka Jeff Gannon) the journalistically untrained, hard-right (no pun intended) leaning homosexual prostitute Rove-shill in the White House press corp may be linked to Roger Stone and his wife Nikki, a Republican couple who have specialized in dirty-tricks from the Republican White Houses of Nixon, Reagan and Bush l through Bush ll (and are trusted friends of Karl Rove).

Did I mention they were among the first to encourage Republicans to emphasize family values?

Did I mention they were swingers and it is through their 'lifestyle' they met James Guckert?

And oh, BTW, it looks like they were in on the forging of the Dan Rather/CBS documents...

Now do you see what I mean?

Now, why would Rove have persons that by his own political party's definition be depraved, immoral sexual deviants working for him on such potentially dangerous and illegal projects, if he didn't trust them? When would you trust people who, by your own definition, are outside your standards? When you know them well? When you are one of them, yourself?

Just asking...

Week-End Warp: 2/13/05

I've decided to begin doing a Week-End Wrap (which I'm terming a Warp, as that's about how I feel) that combines a variety of topics into one post. So, here it is, my first Week-End Warp:
  • On BushCo's Iraq Invasion we have this from Democracy Now and professor of linguistics Noam Chomsky:
"The first thing they'll do is reestablish relations with Iran...The next thing that might happen is that a Shiite-controlled, more or less democratic Iraq might stir up feelings in the Shiite areas of Saudi Arabia, which happen to be right nearby and which happen to be where all the oil is. So you might find what in Washington must be the ultimate nightmare-a Shiite region which controls most of the world's oil and is independent."
Chomsky goes on to discuss how given the administration's penchant for war all the scenarios are catastrophic (nuclear) and goes so far to say that it may be China that intervenes to create peace.
  • Dem News: Dean is the new DNC chair! The media leeches are trying to fake you out with their glee over his appointment, suggesting that crushing the DNC is only a scream away. Yet on the red underbelly there are those who think Dean is a threat (hellyea). Harry Reid is turning out to have the spine we were hoping for and this Monday Senator Boxer will get 5,000 red roses for having twice the spine we were hoping for!

BUSHCO KNEW: 9/11 Report Cites Many Warnings About Hijackings

From The New York Times:
In the months before the Sept. 11 attacks, federal aviation officials reviewed dozens of intelligence reports that warned about Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda, some of which specifically discussed airline hijackings and suicide operations, according to a previously undisclosed report from the 9/11 commission.
...and,
The Bush administration has blocked the public release of the full, classified version of the report for more than five months, officials said, much to the frustration of former commission members who say it provides a critical understanding of the failures of the civil aviation system. The administration provided both the classified report and a declassified, 120-page version to the National Archives two weeks ago and, even with heavy redactions in some areas, the declassified version provides the firmest evidence to date about the warnings that aviation officials received concerning the threat of an attack on airliners and the failure to take steps to deter it.

New York Daily News - Bush Press Pal Quits Over Gay Prostie Link

Gannon, Bush, The Daily News -- THE DAILY NEWS! Tonight someone in the White House is getting HIS ass reamed (giggle)...
"The issue here is whether someone with connections to male prostitution was given unfettered access to the White House and copies of internal CIA documents. For a family values administration, that's pretty creepy,' said John Aravosis, one of the bloggers chasing the story."

Pentagon to Broadcast to Millions of U.S. Homes

Oh...
My...
God...

I don't even know how to describe what the effect of state-sponsored broadcast militarism will be...but what do you want to bet draft-aged men start to feel an irrepresible need to become members of the Army of One (isn't that an oxymoron?).

Count Every Vote Act of 2005

Hillary Clinton and Barbara Boxer are co-sponsoring the Count Every Vote Act of 2005.

They're asking for citizen co-sponsors and you can sign-on here: Friends of Hillary.com - Count Every Vote!.
This comprehensive election reform bill will:

* Provide a verified paper ballot for every vote cast in electronic voting machines.
* Set a uniform standard for provisional ballots, so that every qualified voter within the state will know their votes are treated equally and will be counted.
* Require the Federal Election Assistance Commission to issue standards that ensure uniform access to voting machines and election personnel in every community. It's outrageous that some people in predominantly minority communities had to wait up to 10 hours to vote, while people in other communities often voted in minutes!
Just do it.

Pataki Political Guru Starts 'Stop Her Now' PAC to Stop a Hillary Presidential Run, NOW?

You know, sometimes the shit Republican's pull is hysterical. They are so terrified of a Clinton, any Clinton, that this has already been launched.

No, I didn't tear the wings off flies as a kid...but I do seem to take a cruel delight in watching those who propbably did, writhe on the heads of 'pins' like Boxer and hopefuly now, Clinton.

INCOMING: BushCo's Own SS

From Common Dreams:
The film Seven Days In May is one of my all-time favourites. The gripping 1964 drama, starring Burt Lancaster, depicts an attempted coup by far rightists in Washington using a top-secret Pentagon anti-terrorist unit called something like "Contelinpro."

Life imitates art. This week, former military intelligence analyst William Arkin revealed a hitherto unknown directive, with the Orwellian name "JCS Conplan 0300-97" authorizing the Pentagon to employ special, ultra-secret "anti-terrorist" military units on American soil for what the author claims are "extra-legal missions." In other words, using U.S. soldiers to kill or arrest Americans, acts that have been illegal since the U.S. Civil War.
and...
The Pentagon's new spy arm will be largely excluded from Congressional oversight or media examination. Its special operations teams will roam the globe, all under cover of "deep black" missions of which no records will be kept, and no questions asked.
Equally worrying, the Pentagon's new special-ops units are headed up by notorious religious fanatic, Lt. Gen. William Boykin, who calls the U.S. Army "the house of God" and Islamic insurgents "agents of Satan." He warned Muslims, "my God is bigger than your god, which is an idol."

Boykin's command will now dispatch post-modern Christian crusaders to cleanse the world of Satanic Muslims and other miscreants. The Pentagon's new special forces will be able to run operations of which the CIA knows nothing.

Goldberg Attacks Juan Cole on Iran

As you may know (by now) I am convinced that Bush intends to invade Iran; doing so is next on the Neocon Perpetual War To-Do list, I have made a bet I hope to LOSE that Bush will do so, and I created an election-related bumper slogan "Vote for Bush, Send Your Kids to Iran". I am, in short, invested in the story.

This post from kos, therefore, greatly interests me. Goldberg is often referenced, but it looks like Goldberg is a bad guy. Why would I trust a kos referral (i.e. Juan) over someone else? Well, if you read the dKos, you know why...
The reason Mr. Goldberg is alarmed that I pointed this obvious fact out [that the Iranian elections in 1997 were more Democratic than the Iraqi ones in 2005] is that he wants to kill thousands of Iranians and thousands of US troops in a war of aggression on Iran. If the American public knows that there is a lively struggle between hardliners and conservatives in Iran, and that an American intervention there would be a huge disaster and would forestall the natural evolution of Iran away from Khomeinism, then they might not support Mr. Goldberg's monstrous warmongering.

I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta my Hair...

If you've been reading this blog since November you will remember that early on I noted that liberals (Democrats in particular) were behaving as abuse victims. Months later Michael Moore quoted nearly the same source, making the same observation. Today Alternet has brought us this, A Progressive 12-step Program:
"We find ourselves stuck in an abusive relationship with George Bush and his cronies. This abuse is clearly evident in Iraq with its horrendous images of prisoner torture and daily TV feeds of civilian casualties. It is also shown in the administration's disdain for the American needy, as well as in its gleeful willingness to pillage our natural resources. Like all chronic abusers, Bush and company are obsessed with power, willing to do anything to retain it, even if this means running roughshod over human rights.

As progressives struggle to regain their footing and mount an effective defense of democracy, we must recognize that Americans are trapped in this abusive relationship. To escape it we will need our own version of a 12-step program, beginning with the recognition that we feel powerless in the face of the Bush aggression, and that this has profoundly impacted our lives, made them to some extent, unmanageable."

...and,
A famous Buddhist prayer is known as the three gems: "I take refuge in the Buddha; I take refuge in the Dharma; I take refuge in the Sangha." Meaning: "I take refuge in the spirit of the Buddha, in his teachings, and in the Buddhist community." As we seek recovery from our abusive relationship with the Bush Administration, perhaps we can find strength in our own version of this wisdom, "I take refuge in democracy; in the spirit and teachings of the founders of our country, and the patriots that followed them. I take refuge in the community of those who struggled to preserved this democracy."

ELECTION FRAUD UPDATE: Must...keep...going...

Thanks in part to Republican efforts at retaliation against Ohio vote-count attorneys, new statistical data has been formulated on the 2004 elections. From US CountVotes.org we have this: "Prominent Statisticians Refute 'Explanation' of 2004 U.S. Exit Poll Discrepancies in New Edison/Mitofsky Report and Urge Investigation of U.S. Presidential Election Results. President Bush won November's election by 2.5% yet exit polls showed Kerry leading by 3%. Which was correct?" and "The pollsters at Edison/Mitofsky agreed that their 2004 exit polls, for whatever reason, had the poorest accuracy in at least twenty years."

From the statistician's response report (PDF):
"There are statistical indications that a systematic, nationwide shift of 5.5% of the vote may have occurred, and that we'll never get to the bottom of this, unless we gather the data we need for mathematical analysis and open, robust scientific debate.", says Bruce O'Dell, USCountVotes' Vice President.
...that precincts with hand-counted paper ballots showed no statistical discrepancy between the exit polls and the official results, but for other voting technologies, the overall discrepancy was far larger than the polls’ margin of error.
What can I say?

The Barbara Boxer Rose Campaign

The story I wrote covering The Barbara Boxer Rose Campaign can be found on dKos.

This is a link to Coast-to-Coast Florists.

...and Stacy's original email follows:
Send Barbara Boxer a Rose on Valentine's Day!

Senator Barbara Boxer has recently emerged as the leading voice in the fight against the Bush mandate of imperialism abroad and destruction of civil liberties at home. She has disputed the Ohio 2004 election vote, elegantly denied Condoleezza Rice a confirmation vote, and almost single-handedly stood up for the principles of freedom, truth, and accountability that we all hold so dear. She has started what some are calling “The New Boxer Rebellion”—and other Senators are starting to follow her lead.

Now is the time to let her know she has our full support, admiration and thanks.

I have arranged for a national online florist, Coast to Coast Florist, to take $10 pledges from callers up until Feb. 12th for three red roses, which, in a mass delivery, will be taken on Feb 14th to the Hart Senate Building office of Barbara Boxer in Washington DC.

This message will be included with the flowers:

******************

Dear Senator Boxer:

We the people have sent these flowers to you this day in thanks for your unwavering courage and determination to stand up for the principles of freedom and truth in the United States Senate. You are a shining example of what a civil servant can, and should, be, and we, your constituents and supporters, deeply appreciate your heroic charge to bring accountability, responsibility and honesty back into our government.

********************

Here is the order/delivery information:

Call Coast to Coast Florist at 1-888-501-ROSE (7673).
This is a dedicated phone line, created only for this order, a representative will answer “Barbara Boxer Rose Campaign.” Press #1 to order and #2 for more information.

Give the representative your credit card number—you will only be charged $10.00 for your roses. I am picking up the delivery fee.

That’s it.
The cut-off date for orders is Saturday, Feb. 12th. That only gives us TWO weeks!

Also included in this delivery will be a rose dipped in 22k gold for her to keep. This fee I am also paying for.

(You may check out coasttocoastflorist.com online for your own verification purposes—they have an informational link on their customer service page, in the middle of the page on the drop down menu about this--but please make orders only on the toll-free number to ensure your order is included in the mass delivery.)

Sen. Boxer is an emerging hero to liberals everywhere and a grand public thank you is in order. This action will also send a message to other Democratic senators and representatives that we, the people, are watching--and we will support, thank, and reelect those who stand up for our democratic principles. Think of what a million roses could mean! (And, once the roses lose their luster, we would respectfully ask the Senator to donate the deceased to a local manure manufacturer to be made into mulch—we're green, too!)

Feel free to verify all of the above information with this florist--who has taken a chance on this incredible idea and showed tremendous enthusiasm and support. Please email me directly if you need more verification of this movement. This is not spam! We can only do it with your help! Make it happen!

Thanks,

Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose..

As I become increasingly cynical I no longer hear language coming from Bush as I do from others. It sounds like Americanese, but my mind immediately interprets it within the context of my now-ingrained need to understand his words' covert nature. Sadly, I guess I have to finally admit that for me, Bush-speak IS Orwellian.

Bush used the word freedom in many phrases last night, causing me to wonder what was afoot. This afternoon in reflection, my mind dredged up the old song that I use to title this post...

But there is more. Bush is linking Iraqi voting to freedom, American lives lost for that cause (not terrorism oor WMD's) as freedom, Social Security privatization (risk-shifting from the government to you, not investment opportunity) as freedom, tort reform (you can't sue for corporate damages to your health or property - no SSI to help you there either) as freedom, and so on. The word "freedom" is used as a trigger of your highest values. When it is used it invokes your sense of patriotism and loyalty. It is used to hypnotize you into accepting the nature of what it is cloaking; Darwinian social and economic engineering. If they are succesful, you will have the FREEDOM to join the worker caste, dream of attaining the ruling-caste or die by exclusion from both.

I refuse that kind of freedom...

SOTU: 10 pm PST

Apologies for my late coverage. Many of you already have seen or are now listening to recaps of the SOTU. I had unforseen difficulties getting to the original broadcast and I apologize.

I will be reviewing the address during this second broadcast.

The black-inked fingers are juvenile, and there is nothing equivalent between the United States, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Ukraine. We didn't have a fair vote, they did. An immediate appeal to the grey-hairs. A request for stewardship of the economy and a leap immediately into Social Security? A litany of disinformation on jobs, housing and social reforms. The set-up is all optimistic, the facts are not matching. Welcoming bi-partisan work on the economy and cutting the deficit in half by 2009 are the words of a delusional man. Which 150 programs were cut? And since when is billions of dollars a month in spending in Iraq essential? And No Child Left Behind is a lie. Diplomas are only tickets to success? Whose measure of success? PELL grants will need to be larger since students will be earning less. JUNK LAW SUITS? Frivolous asbestos claims? What is this guy talking about? Sit down, sit down, sit down. Republicans love to stand when the words mean they will make more while the working make less.

Comprehensive energy program. There it is - SAFE CLEAN NUCLEAR ENERGY (search my blog for nuclear energy to see the post last week on that one).

He wants that Alaskan refuge drilled tomorrow (four years of debate is enough). No actually, it is too much having to stave off a rapist for four years.

Oh, the tax code. Of course, Bush and who? will get us a tax code that is probably well, flat - slanted to the rich - and leaving out corporations altogether.

Why do we have jobs Americans will not take? Because they pay SO DAMN LITTLE.

Ah, here's the Social Security lie. Come on you scum bag, say it, say it...there it is "bankruptcy". No, No, No. LIAR!!!!!! Oh God, it will change in one big way, you will be receiving lower benefits! And for younger workers - oh God, the lies, lies, lies, lies. HOW does he do this with a straight face?

Download and read the PDA file on my site (search for Playbook) of their Playbook for Social Security reform. His speech is practically taken directly from it...he is speaking slowly, in terms we dumb folks can understand. He is linking it to our children's security...oh God. What he's not saying is that younger workers being invested in it (personal retirement accounts - fuck you) will make sure younger workers are so dependent on the returns of corporate America that they will NEVER, NEVER be willing to regulate, investigate, or otherwise impede corporations in the future. They won't be dependent on the government, they'll be dependent on corporations. What he's not telling you is that he doesn't want to repay the billions he's already siphoned off the account as unreported debt!

Ownership - no. This is cost-shifting risk to younger American's and buying their future votes.

If you want to support the institution of marriage, outlaw divorce. Did this guy just say that some lives should not be sacrificed for the good of others? Then why did over 1000 American's die so Iraqi's could...VOTE?

AH, the attack on 'activist" judges. And his push for the (only) four judges he couldn't get last term. Up or down vote? Look at Cheney. He's in hog heaven; prick.

Oh, I guess now we're going to give more of my tax money to faith-based organizations. I want them paying taxes now too. ALL OF THEM. Tax church's that take government money.

Like the DNA thing, too bad Gonzale's wouldn't back it.

First responders? Don't applaud them, fund them!

Come on, say it, O-S-A-M-A...no?

What coalition? He still hasn't built one, how can he build more?

Oh yes, fight the foundations of radicalism and despair. The only force powerful enough to stop tyranny is the force of human freedom? Did I miss something here? Well, I guess now that we've all declared war on each other, neocons have their set-up for perpetual war...no intention to impose our form of govenrmnt? Well, democracy is our form of government. Is he ever using any part of his brain? How many times is he saying freedom in this one?

Going to Palestine because we weren't invited to the meeting announced between Israel and Palestine - don't want to be left out of this one. And don't believe America will help the two live "side-by-side' in peace. That would wreck the Rapture Index...

Argh, a camera shot of Tom Delay (my eyes have been burnt out)! I'm getting a headache...

The 'our men and women are fighting terrorists in Iraq so we don't have to here', line - well, there weren't any terrorists in Iraq before, but I guess we're all going to forget (and forgive) that now. Enough of this Iraq vote thing...you know it is meaningless. I guess you need some victory to sell SSI reform. Oh jeez will everybody please sit down - this is worse than church. I wish Bush would have paid the cost for Iraq's vote. No, our kid's will, with the baby tax - 36K each. Hope it was worth it, Iraq. I can't afford health insurance, but I sure am glad America spends billions every week so that Iraq can vote...

More terrorist talk. Move one...what is Cheney chewing? Sorry, my mind wanders when it gets numb...

Okay, Iraq, we are going to be in a supporting role. Oh, that would be to dig in for the oil.

Is he still on Iraq? Yes, and that is because he is not bringing any one of the troops home before Cheney owns all the oil...and BushCo. What equipment have we given them? Who is this guy up there? You'll do everything you can to help them recover from terrible injuries? How about bring them home. Oh, we said farewell to soldiers who died for our freedom? What? Our freedom is secure - they died for oil...oh, the Norwood's. They are standing up for the other family members of 1300 dead soldiers? No, I bet they are the only ones who would come...oh, please. My heart strings.

Did he reference FDR? Ohh...

What is the freedom count in this one? Excuse me, I have to hurl now...

PUNDITS immediately got it; he harped on the war to make himself look good enough to sell the SSI scam. Okay let me say it for you: THERE ARE NO WMD'S IN SOCIAL SECURITY!

Rapturists: There is no tomorrow

The excerpts that follow from this excellent article of Bill Moyer's has convinced me finally that these folks are dangerous, insane (in nearly classical terms) and must be stoppped from destroying our society and government further. They must be stopped from killing us because doing so is in their religious mandate.

If we need to understand them as a psychotic, sociopathic movement of potential mass murderers than so be it. I am not going to oblivion for the sake of one of them going to their delusional heaven.
"Remember James Watt, President Ronald Reagan's first secretary of the interior? My favorite online environmental journal, the ever-engaging Grist, reminded us recently of how James Watt told the U.S. Congress that protecting natural resources was unimportant in light of the imminent return of Jesus Christ. In public testimony he said, 'after the last tree is felled, Christ will come back.'

Beltway elites snickered. The press corps didn't know what he was talking about. But James Watt was serious. So were his compatriots out across the country. They are the people who believe the Bible is literally true -- one-third of the American electorate, if a recent Gallup poll is accurate. In this past election several million good and decent citizens went to the polls believing in the rapture index."

So what does this mean for public policy and the environment? Go to Grist to read a remarkable work of reporting by the journalist Glenn Scherer - "The Road to Environmental Apocalypse." Read it and you will see how millions of Christian fundamentalists may believe that environmental destruction is not only to be disregarded but actually welcomed - even hastened - as a sign of the coming apocalypse.

As Grist makes clear, we're not talking about a handful of fringe lawmakers who hold or are beholden to these beliefs. Nearly half the U.S. Congress before the recent election - 231 legislators in total and more since the election - are backed by the religious right.

Forty-five senators and 186 members of the 108th Congress earned 80 to 100 percent approval ratings from the three most influential Christian right advocacy groups. They include Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Assistant Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Conference Chair Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Policy Chair Jon Kyl of Arizona, House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Majority Whip Roy Blunt. The only Democrat to score 100 percent with the Christian coalition was Sen. Zell Miller of Georgia, who recently quoted from the biblical book of Amos on the Senate floor: "The days will come, sayeth the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land." He seemed to be relishing the thought.

The LEAKED Republican Social Security Privatization Playbook!

The Republican playbook for selling the GOP privatization of Social Security Insurance to the American public is entitled Saving Social Security: A Guide to Social Security Reform. A 103 page report that you can download here in PDF, it was leaked from a secret planning meeting last week that was intended to head off the mounting Democratic assault on BushCo's plan.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

I'm going to have a copy printed at Kinko's tomorrow; great bathroom reading and a laff-riot study in GOP tactical framing. Enjoy and then fight back!
