Cardinal Poupard Hearts Darwin
I'm not Catholic, but growing up my Irish (Democratic) neighbors were. I remember the tolerant but 'sparky' fights between them and my folks over John F. Kennedy The Great. As a grade-school kid I loved Kennedy myself (and of course remember exactly where I was when I heard the news of his death).
For years now in the back of my mind I've been wondering about the Catholics and where they were fitting into the swing to the right in America. To me they were the core of the "bleeding heart" (of Christ) Liberals. The care for the impoverished and the down-trodden always appealing to me, the injunctions against birth control and abortion sadly less-so but hey, no religion is perfect.
At least with this bit of information I know how they view fundamentalists and evolution. Thank God that the church old enough to claim some historical experience weighs in on the side of sanity:

"American Catholics look more favorably on Muslims and Mormons than they do on fundamentalist Christians, according to a new poll on political, cultural and moral trends in Catholic life."Now just imagine how much better it will be when finally disgusted by the attempts at taking over America via the courts, schools and public commons, Catholics start weighing in on the side of the ACLU. After all if this is a country fashioned in the image of Protestants, it can't be a Catholic country too.
