NO Disaster Relief Links
Honestly, this is just too awful for partisanship right now (the blame game always finds players). For now, here are links and ideas for helping out from a variety of sources (feel free to email suggestions):
1. The Red Cross is under heavy traffic and as of now the site is not working. Yahoo has posted a dedicated page for Red Cross donations.
2. AmeriCares has already sent disaster response teams to Mississippi to assess the needs of millions affected by the hurricane.
3. Feed the Children has sent 25 truckloads of materials to Mississippi and Louisiana, and is sending more to affected areas in Texas and Georgia.
4. Roomate Click is offering free housing services to New Orleans' homeless, as is Katrina Housing.
5. Progressive bloggers have united in the hopes of raising $1 million for Red Cross' Katrina relief effort -- DropCash.com is collecting the donations and keeping the running tally.
6. MoveOn.org has set up a Web site, Hurricane Housing, where Katrina victims in need of shelter can connect with people willing to open their doors to help.
7. Operation USA has two warehouses of supplies in Los Angeles that will be sent to the areas hit by Katrina as soon as possible.
8. If you are trying to contact a relative, Air America Radio brings you Emergency VoiceMail. Call 1-866-217-6255, enter your everyday phone number, and then record a message. Other people who know your everyday phone number (even if it doesn't work anymore) can call Emergency Voicemail, enter the phone number they associate with you, and hear your message.
9. National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) writes: "If you are moved to donate, we recommend the following two websites that list highly-rated charities assisting in the relief effort: Charity Navigator and Network for Good. "
10. The AFL-CIO is seeking to gather 1,000 union members willing to volunteer wherever needed most. The group is also collecting donations through its Union Community Fund.
11. The Humane Society of America has deployed disaster teams to help rescue the thousands of trapped, injured and abandoned animals in the danger zone. The HSUS is currently seeking donations to help fund these missions.
